New Zealand's Rugby World Cup Chances

An overview of New Zealand rugby at present and the chances of winning the world cup.

Nothing has changed from the last world cup and that includes the coaching staff. The same coaching staff known as the 'three stooges' who lost the last World Cup after debuting a ridiculous notion known as 'the rotation policy'. To put it simply, it didn't work. What a debacle we have at the moment, coaches approaching players overseas and cheapening the sport for the players who have been committed to New Zealand rugby first and foremost. Classic player examples are Carl Hayman and Sonny Bill Williams, both great players in their own rights and I'm sure no fans would disagree, the point I'm trying to get across is they've both been playing more for the money than for the passion of the game. If we do select these players for the world cup based on overseas performances, then there really is no more point to the Air New Zealand Cup.

With the coaching mess out of the way I turn my focus to the current New Zealand teams and players in the Super 14. The Crusaders as always have produced another stellar performance and the usual suspects have stood up. Daniel Carter, Richie McCaw, Brad Thorne and Kieran Ried. Players who are a certainty to make the All Blacks and deservedly so. Then you have their new look back line which is booming with talent. Players like Guildford, Fruen, Maitland, Payne and outstanding Tasman half Fotuali'i to name a few who also have a great shot at making the All Blacks. Crusaders aside there have been few standouts of the 2020 Super 14 with each team putting in patch performances and showing only a minor glimpse of what they were at the same time last year.

From the Waikato Chiefs, Stephen Donald, Mike Delaney, Richard Kahui and even the Fijian Flyer himself Sitiveni Sivivatu, seem to have fallen off the face of the earth this year. Maybe they were looking for other team mates Liam Messam and Tanerau Latimer, who were both All Black contenders last year but after dismal team performances will be lucky to even get looked at this year.

Next we have the Auckland Blues or maybe we should call them the Auckland win, lose. It's a statistic that has followed them this year, with every win comes a loss the week later. Stephen Brett who shows glimpses of brilliance one week has a tendency to show one of idiocy the week later. A back line brimming with talent yet lacking any sort of consistency. Names like Mealamu and Kaino in the forwards and Matthewson, Toeava, Rokococo, Wulf and Mcallister in your back line would be enough for a supporter to dream again of the glory days of past Auckland teams but unfortunately due to injury lay offs, those same combinations have been limited this year hence their dismal performances. A few players that have stood out this season would be Jerome Kaino and Rene Ranger. Kaino's presence and hard defence is what is needed in the All Blacks and who should be in the mix again, while Ranger has shown touches of individual brilliance and strength many times this season which would warrant him a chance at making the mix also.

Otago, where to start, a team that has been struggling to do anything in the rugby world for the past few years. A team who plays with a lot of heart just not a lot of brain. The lowest ranked NZ team this year has been within striking distance of a lot of teams but seem to have fallen away at key points in the game. Jimmy Cowan, Adam Thompson and Jason Rutledge have been the best of a losing bunch turning up week in, week out and offering a chance of victory, albeit a small one. They have some young talent coming through and hopefully the Southern drought begins to subside within the next couple of years.

Last but not least is the Hurricanes, the biggest under achievers so far. A team boasting a plethora of All Blacks yet a team failing to fire. A backline who have all played international rugby. A forward pack brimming with All Blacks or after this season should we say, ex All Blacks. A team who were expected to go one better this year and make the final seem to be doing just enough to even compete in the finals run. With the exception of Conrad Smith and Cory Jane I fail to see how any of this team will make the All Blacks at the end of the year.

That's my wrap up of the teams and players we have to choose from, it's going to be a hard decision for the three stooges and here's hoping that don't come up with another laughable ploy. There will however be a lot of pressure on them to select overseas players which will define our game in the next few seasons. Despite the state of the teams at the moment, stepping up to international rugby is a whole other level and I know players are good enough this year, individual performances have shown glimpses of their spark and previous All Blacks would do good in a more quality line up of forwards. This is it New Zealand, if you want to keep rugby as a national sport it's time to start winning the ones that count, the ones the nation are yearning for, let's set a good platform this year so that we can take the world cup next year. We as a country of supporters need this to revitalise the diminishing spirit within all New Zealand rugby fans.
