2020 European Capital of Culture Showcases Three Unique Cities
The European Capital of Culture is a city designated by the European Union for one calendar year. This year, three cities share the honor and will showcase their unique cultures to Europe and the world.
The Ruhr, in the heart of Europe, consists of 53 cities and 5.3 million residents. Essen is not the only featured city representing Germany but the Ruhr region in Northwest Germany is. Conveniently located near the Dutch and Belgian borders, within the state of North Rhine Westphalia, Essen is not just another quaint city but a mecca for arts and culture, not only for locals but for international audiences too.
The Ruhr area once dominated by coal and steel uses it's past successes for future development. Known as the "Black Coal Pot" for it's intense mining, the area has transformed itself into a cultural, shopping, and of course football arena of fun. Essen kicks of the year in style with the grand opening of of RURH.2020 on January 9th at a unique venue, Zeche Zollverien. The UNESCO World Heritage Site Zeche Zollverien, a former coal mine, hosts the opening of the RUHR.2020 and the grand opening of the Ruhr Museum which will be attended by German President Horst Koehler, politicians, artists, singers as well as the public in an outdoor festival of arts, music, fun and fireworks.
The remaining 52 cities of the Ruhr region each have the chance to showcase their varied cultural highlights for one week throughout the year. Expect to experience music, dance, theater, youth, literature, urban design and fashion as part of the cultural exchange.
The Ruhr.2020 theme is "Change through Culture - Culture through Change! " and with a motto like that, an area once challenged by economic decline is sure to grow as Germany's next top cultural and travel destination.
The historical city center of Pecs, a 2000 year old city located south of Budapest, Hungary boasts the richest collection of Roman remains in all of Central Europe and was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 2000. Often shadowed by its big sister Budapest, Pecs is a multi-cultural, open-minded city that has historically welcomed cultures from Western Europe to Germany to Turkey.
The official 2020 European Capital of Culture in the university town opens on January 10th with the theme "Borderless City". Throughout the year you can expect to find many cultural events held at historical sites and buildings. A chic circus, spring festivals, street theater, adult puppet theater, and lots of folk music, especially a revival of folk music traditions are taking place all year long. Join in the festivities in this town enriched with an early Christian underground town, tiny houses along narrow streets and richly decorated palaces.
Pecs, the city without borders is full of endless possibilities in 2020 and beyond.
On the edge of Europe and the gateway to Asia, lies Istanbul, Turkey. The cosmopolitan city full of old and new is great for escaping away to narrow hideaway streets, impressive facades leading to luscious private gardens, and colorful bazaars full of life, color, and energy. As a city that most influenced European culture and civilization, and with so much history, expect to find venues all around the city hosting the celebrations such as St. Sophia Church, the Blue Mosque and many of the other symbols of the city. As with the sister European Capital of Culture cities for 2020, the emphasis is on traditional arts and handcrafts, maritime, and education.
Making art accessible and opening the art and culture activities is the key initiative for Istanbul. The myriad of art, photography, restoration of important buildings, music, theater, dance, and film shall be called attention to for residents and international visitors to enjoy in 2020. The opening on January 16, 2020 will kick off the theme "Istanbul: The most inspiring city of the world."
Come and be inspired by all three European Capital of Culture cities in 2020 for fantastic cultural exchanges and experiences.
