Piper's Pub - A Taste of the British Isles in Pittsburgh

Piper's Pub found the right niche in Pittsburgh's hottest night life area by combining great food, a huge selection of imported beer and scotch, and access to soccer and rugby matches.

On February 6, extensive damage occurred to Piper's Pub dining room when water pipes in the ceiling burst. Renovations are completed and regular patrons packed their favorite establishment for its March 29 reopening.

In Pittsburgh's hottest bar and restaurant zone, East Carson St. on the South Side flats, Piper's Pub has survived the fierce competition for years by offering consistently high quality food and drink.

Being unique and filling a niche market has been the right recipe. In a town where 99% of the population lives and breathes Steeler football, Piper's Pub has become the place to watch soccer and rugby. With 4 large screen TVs it's packed for the World Cup and Rugby World Cup. Piper's Pub website offers a complete schedule for viewing the English Premier League, Champions League, Scottish Premier League, FA Cup, Euro 2020, and more at the bar.

Piper's Pub bills itself as "A Taste of the British Isles" and represents the best of traditional English, Scottish and Irish cuisine. This is a culinary heritage that has sometimes been the brunt of jokes, tainted with a dubious reputation, but if the fare served at Piper's Pub is any indication, the people of these island nations know how to serve a fine feast indeed!

Wisely, Piper's Pub has not posed as a cutesy Irish pub. We all know that kind of ersatz ethnic chain restaurant: waiters in big sombreros and waitresses in peasant blouses hustling around in a fake adobe setting. Luckily, no scampering leprechauns here; they cut the blarney. One neon shamrock in the window is as cutesy as it gets, and since less is more, the place succeeds in appearing to be a straightforward, middle class British pub.

The offerings in all the menu categories include some American standards in case you don't feel like expanding your horizons. Appetizers include the usual onion petals and chicken fingers, but try the Ploughman's Platter, a selection of British Isle cheeses, apples, gherkins, apple chutney and bread for $8.95. There's a smoked salmon pate with cream cheese, fresh dill and crusty bread for $7.95.

Our favorite appetizer is one which, we must admit, doesn't sound nearly as delicious as it is: Scotch eggs. It starts with hard boiled eggs. A layer of breakfast sausage is wrapped around them to form a little football, and the whole is deep fried to a dark brown. It's served with hot sauce for $7.95. After enjoying Scotch eggs on numerous visits, I only recently read on the menu description that they are breaded. The coating of breading is so thin and unobtrusive that I had actually never realized it was there.

Piper's Pub salads are uniformly excellent, the Stilton and rasher is delicious with the piquant blue Stilton cheese and bacon over mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, capers and hard boiled egg. At $8.95 it makes a lovely lunch.

Stilton cheese also graces the croutons on the Gaelic four onion soup, made with caramelized leeks, scallions, red and white onions, and deglazed with Bass Ale.

Portions are large at Piper's Pub. Pittsburgh diners expect a lot of food for their money, and you'll probably leave Piper's with a doggie bag.

On the sandwich list, you'll find the usual Rachel, Reuben, chicken breast and turkey. The English dip was excellent on our last trip, piled with thin sliced, completely lean roast beef, red onion and tomato on a long hoagie bun. The horseradish mayo was wimpy mild, unfortunately, but our super attentive waiter, Greg, quickly cured that by bringing the real stuff, pure horseradish, to make it perfect. At $7.95 with a choice of fresh slaw or fries, it's more than enough.

More unusual is a banger sandwich of English sausages with Jameson onion gravy on a hoagie roll, also with slaw or fries at the same price.

Entrée listings at Piper's Pub tend toward common American fare like grilled pork chops, grilled salmon, and herb chicken, which are all tasty, but look to the menu section labeled "From Across the Pond" for the best treats.

Here you'll see a Guinness Stout based hearty beef and vegetable stew served in a crusty bread bowl for $13.95. How about "Toad in the Hole", four bangers in golden brown Yorkshire pudding, covered in Jameson onion gravy; you won't find that at TGIFridays.

The Shepherd's Pie ranks as one of the most popular dishes. Topped with half mashed potatoes, it's a hearty delight of chunks of beef and fresh vegetables in Irish stout gravy, all baked toasty.

Lamb, of course, is a staple in the British Isles, and Piper's Pub serves a lamb and chestnut stew which can be requested in a crusty bread bowl, as a Shepherd's Pie or in a pastry crust, potpie style.

Sunday brunch, from 9 am to 3 pm, features boxty, a crispy potato pancake folded over a selection of fillings, such as corned beef, bangers and provolone, or smoked salmon. The traditional English breakfast with baked beans and eggs is $6.95.

With twenty seven draught beers and dozens more by the bottle, Piper's Pub is an international beer lover's heaven. Names like Skullsplitter Orkney Ale remind us why this place is big with the Rugby crowd.

Scotch is a topic unto itself at Piper's Pub. The website lists the selection of single malt scotch as "vast", and after scrolling, scrolling and scrolling down the list, I'd say they aren't exaggerating.

Bartender Josh Heckel has his hands full dispensing this plethora of libations to the crowd and they apparently appreciate his labor highly. On reopening night one of his groupies made a glittery "Welcome Back Josh" poster featuring a big picture of their hero.

Be warned that although the kitchen serves to 11pm, you should eat before 6pm if you want to have quiet conversation with your dining companions. The sound level will make shouting necessary after that. The acoustics need some work. Although the Piper's Pub crowd is heavy on perfectly civilized workers from the trendy South Side offices, you might hit a night with soccer fans drinking Skullsplitter, and they aren't exactly quiet.
